The CDRA exhibition will continue until the end of the Core Strategy consultation period. You can go along and see it on the balcony at the Haven Centre from 9.00AM to 5.00PM on weekdays. We hope that it will explain the implications of development in East Grinstead for Crawley Down and the surrounding villages and roads. CDRA is extremely concerned that traffic will increase by more than double on some routes. In addition there will be a sizeable erosion of the strategic gap between East Grinstead and Crawley Down by the houses and then further erosion with a relief road passing through part of Crawley Down. Noise and pollution will be delivered to us by a full or partial relief road. If there is no relief road, either full or partial, the traffic on our roads will be even worse.
Our suggested solution is to put the houses at Crabbet Park which is convenient for the M23 at junction 10A with an upgrade and convenient for employment at Crawley and Gatwick thus reducing commuter congestion and CO2 emissions.
More information is available at the exhibition and from the leaflets which are available there. It is important for you to express your opinion so there are some response forms also available. You need to reply by March 20th. We have placed collection boxes in the gift shop and the butchers or you may also leave them at the Haven Centre Office and we will guarantee to deliver them to MSDC for you. We need to receive them by March 19th.
The developments will affect the next generation but they are not able to respond for themselves so it is up to YOU.

How do I respond to the core strategy?
- First of all you state your name and address at the top of the letter and add the date.
- Next you say, "I am writing to you to object to the Core Strategy".
- Follow this by saying, "In my opinion the Core Strategy will be detrimental to Crawley Down because..."
- Then you give the reasons:
- The Houses which will be built in Imberhorne Lane will erode the strategic gap between my village and East Grinstead.
- Not enough employment opportunities can be created in East Grinstead to prevent a large number from commuting to outside the town.
- The traffic studies have not considered the impact of traffic on Crawley Down.
- Crawley Down village roads will become rat runs where people try to avoid the congestion which will result from the traffic spilling onto the A264 from the relief road.
- Crawley Down Village and the Worth Way will be subject to noise and pollution from the relief road.
- If Route 1B is built it will destroy even more of the strategic gap between the houses and Crawley Down.
- If route 1B is built there will be infill building in the future.
- The additional traffic arising from the houses in East Grinstead cannot be absorbed by the proposed junction changes.
- You can now say,"I think the problem of finding a site for new Housing could be solved by using the contingency site at Crabbett Park. This is ideally situated for access to the M23 and for the Fastway bus service to Crawley as well as being close to Three Bridges Railway Station. The employment opportunities are much greater in Crawley and at Gatwick Airport than can be created in East Grinstead.
- Don't forget to sign your name.
- You can send your response by mail or you can pop it into one of the boxes to be found at the Haven Centre or in Flanagan's Butchers. Core Strategy
The Core Strategy is the planning document which over the next 20 years is the basis for deciding how development will affect East Grinstead and the surrounding villages with regard to building and development. This will include Crawley Down as it is quite likely that it will propose that we will have a share of new houses. It will also include proposals for the East Grinstead Area Action plans of which the Relief Road is part.
The Residents Association will be keeping up to date with what is happening and will keep you informed. There will be another Public consultation period just before Christmas when we will be calling on your help, as we did last year. Your response then was the main influencing factor which made Route 1B the new preferred route as opposed to Route 1A. So all your letters made a difference.
Relief Road Update
Shortly after the Election in May, the District Council changed the position of the preferred route from 1A to 1B. On the 25th of July Mid Sussex District Council voted it through to the next stage.
Route 1B is better for the village as the road will not damage our Ancient Woodland or the Monastery and most importantly it will not directly affect many hundreds of our residents. It will however still affect the tranquillity of the Worth Way and there are still serious concerns over the traffic it will bring to our area as a whole. It is also possible that route 1A will still be adopted.
As a result, the Residents Association is still very much concerned about the implications for us. We have appointed a new committee member to replace Ian Pearce as our representative at the Post Referendum Campaign meetings and they will be clearly monitoring events.
WHAT CAN THE PUBLIC DO?
It is proposed that a further Consultation period will happen just before Christmas. We will be rallying the Village once more to action. We will again be asking you to put pen to paper to respond the to the proposals.
Last year a staggering 900 communications were sent from Crawley Down from 1800 dwellings. This has to have been a contributory factor in the decision to change the route from 1A to 1B, along with the results of the District Council elections which, in Crawley Down, were fought and won over the Relief Road.

Thank you to all of you who came along on the protest march on Sunday. It was covered by BBC South-East and BBC South as well as several local newspapers. the estimate for numbers present were around 1200, which is brilliant.
To continue with this success, everone needs to ensure that their objections reach MSDC by next Monday, July 3rd. If you want an objection form, you can find them in Jan's petshop in the village.
